Case Study:
“Birthing on Country is a metaphor for the best start in life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies
and their families, an appropriate transition to motherhood and parenting for women and an integrated,
holistic and culturally appropriate model of care for all” (Kildea et al, 2018). The Birthing in Our Community
(BiOC) program aims to integrate principles of Birthing on Country into mainstream urban health services to
improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their babies.

culturally appropriate care? (1000 words)
3. How has incorporating principles of Birthing on Country improved outcomes for mothers, babies and
families in the BiOC program? (approx. 500 words) 2
