Case Study:

“Birthing on Country is a metaphor for the best start in life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies and their families, an appropriate transition to motherhood and parenting for women and an integrated, holistic and culturally appropriate model of care for all” (Kildea et al, 2018). The Birthing in Our Community (BiOC) program aims to integrate principles of Birthing on Country into mainstream urban health services to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their babies.

Assignment Questions

  1. How are the principles of “Birthing on Country” described in the literature? (approx. 500 words)
  • How did the BiOC program integrate principles of Birthing on Country in an urban setting to facilitate culturally appropriate care? (1000 words)
  • How has incorporating principles of Birthing on Country improved outcomes for mothers, babies and families in the BiOC program? (approx. 500 words)

Instructions for this assessment task:

  • As this is a question-and-answer based task you may use the questions as subheadings in your assignment. No introduction or conclusion is required.
    • The term “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander” should be used to describe individuals and communities in preference to generalised terms such as “Indigenous” or abbreviations such as “ATSI”
    • The articles provided in the assessment folder (AT1 Key Resources) should form the basis for your discussion, however additional evidence will be required to support your discussion. Sources of evidence may include peer reviewed journal articles and websites designed for health professionals.
