Assignment overview:
Students will explore a research topic in either a quantitative or qualitative domain. They will
develop their critical application of the research process, with the initial stage of development and
definition of research aim and objectives, and a subsequent collection and evaluation of the
literature on the research topic chosen. Students will also identify and outline appropriate research
methodologies that align to a research aim and objectives developed. Students will prepare a
research proposal that will help them with their capstone research project in semester 7.
Overall aim:
To enable students to produce an individual research plan, with the following components: (1) an
APA revision, (2) a research summary intended as a basis for discussions with faculty, and (3) a
research proposal, which will be related to an area of hospitality and will be used in the preparation
for the student’s capstone project in semester 7.
Learning Outcomes and Transferable Skills
LO1: Evaluate a real-life research problem using literature with well-reasoned and academically
supported arguments based on academic theories, models, concepts and principles.
LO2: Clearly state the aim and objectives of a specific study.
LO3: Structure a valid and reliable systematic research process using an appropriate application
of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods for data collection, analysis, interpretation of
data in a study.
LO5: Develop the skills needed to design and manage a project and develop the skills needed
to evaluate the risks associated in a research project.
