Group Presentation: Case study (30%)
Deadline: 5
th December, noon (recording to be submitted via Canvas)
Each group has ~20 (max 25 minutes)
Group size: 5 is the recommended group size
The presentation consists of an existing market investigation conducted by UK competition
authorities. The aim of this project is to show an understanding of competition issues and of
the tools available to assess markets. A successful presentation should explain with clarity and
in a concise way the most relevant aspects of the chosen case study. Choose ONE of the
following three real-world case studies:
a) Case 1; CC Market Investigation: BAA (IGNORE REMEDIES)
b) Case 2; CMA Market Merger: Amazon / Deliveroo
c) Case 3; EC COMP Merger: Olympic / Aegean Airlines
Presentation Structure (Example):
a) Introduction (about 15%)
i) If you choose a market study: Outline possible ways in which firms can abuse their
dominant position and why this is detrimental to consumers.
ii) If you choose a merger study: Outline the process to determine whether a merger poses
concerns for consumers’ welfare
b) Briefly provide the background and define the problem (about 10%)
c) Describe and critically discuss the tools/analyses used to assess the problem (about 50%).
What did the competition authority do to assess the problem?
d) Depending on the case study: propose additional analyses/tools (Here you can speculate on
the availability of data or information) and/OR provide a critical assessment of the methods
used, and/OR an assessment whether remedies ultimately helped competition (here you should
relate to additional sources) (about 25%) The number of words is indicative but should not be
considerably exceeded.

Further Presentation Guideline
In the introduction students should outline possible ways in which firms can abuse their
dominant position and why this is detrimental to consumers. Here they should very briefly
mention pricing strategies (such as predatory pricing or using low prices as signals) and non pricing strategies such as investment decisions, product proliferation. Detrimental effects to
consumers could include limited choices, higher prices or lower quality.
If students choose a merger study they should very briefly outline the process to determine
whether a merger poses concerns for consumers’ welfare. This would imply a description of
methods to determine the relevant market (such as the SSNIP method) and to determine
dominance. Students should also mention that regulator should also consider possible
efficiency gains and also potential entry.
Students should then provide the background the case study in a way to provide a self-contained
summary of the case and critically discuss what was done by the relevant authority to reach a
decision. Here students could focus on the most relevant analyses conducted and should show
an understanding of why the analysis was conducted and what was the outcome.
Finally, students should try to go beyond the content of the case study by either propose
additional analyses/tools or provide a critical assessment of the methods used. Some students
may also choose to assessment whether remedies ultimately helped competition.
Evaluation Criteria
The quality of the project will be judged on a variety of aspects, the most important amongst
which are:
a) The extent to which the candidate shows a clear understanding of the problem and of the
instruments/analyses used.
b) Critical thinking, argumentation and support; whether you understand, support (with
economic theory) or criticize the use of a particular tool/instrument, the omission of a particular
assessment. Try and argue very clearly and support your argument with the use of economic
theory. You can also use evidence from academic papers or other relevant sources (e.g.
consultancies’ reports). Always cite those sources!
c) The originality of your presentation. You are required to provide an original contribution
based on your own reasoning, the use of economic theory and/or the provision of relevant
examples. A mere paraphrasing of the case-study content will be penalized. Avoid
quotations.

d) The logical structure and readability. The structure should be logical, however, and not
jump back and forth between logically different parts; repetition should be avoided. (Think
about using diagrams to summarize the logical structure of your essay or part of the content.)
e) the quality of the sources cited to support the contents; you can use academic papers,
reports, or secondary data to support your argument. Avoid referring to websites, in particular
generic websites.
