Assignment brief
Use as a basis the Engcom Case Study from the course, complete the following:
1.Assuming that production of the new Wind Turbine is to be started in exactly 3 years’ time, create, and align the lifecycles for finishing the new horizontal wind turbine (for the 4 power ratings), production line for all the new turbine ratings and installation of the complete Integrated Power Solution into one customer’s premises. Write a justification for your choice of lifecycles, any tailoring, and the particular alignment.
2.The organisation has identified the Intelligent switch-over control system (ISCS) software module to be strategically important for future product versions and as a vehicle for developing a much-improved software capability. Create a lifecycle also for this component of the Integrated Power Solution.
3.Engcom will be undergoing substantial change, including a 20% growth in staff in the following 3 years. Develop a top-level plan and lifecycle for the incorporation of the new staff.
4.Align all 5 (New turbine, production line, installation for customer, ISCS and staff uplift) lifecycles in a single diagram highlighting interdependencies.
5.Make and state all other necessary assumptions to complete the coursework.
What we are looking for
Present your answer using the following sections:
– Introduction. Give context and background of information relevant to the system or organisational environment.
– Critical analysis of the chosen lifecycles for the New Wind Turbine. Based on your analysis of the system under study, use the advantages and disadvantages of the different lifecycles to explore the most appropriate lifecycles and any associated tailoring for the new turbine development, production line, and installation at the customer’s site. Make sure you give the reader enough information about the system so that they understand the basics and any complexities around the development, production and installation. Bring ideas from other sources to help you present your arguments, either because they support what you say or because they contrast with what you are saying.
– Critical analysis of the chosen lifecycle for the ISCS software module. Based on your analysis of the ISCS software module, use the advantages and disadvantages of the different lifecycles to explore the most appropriate lifecycle and any associated tailoring for the module. Make sure you this analysis includes any differences between the ISCS software module and the new wind turbine. Make sure you identify how they may be aligned or if not what the risks are to the overall project.
– Evaluate the organisational capability development. Reflect upon the development of the organisational capability (additional resources) required to deliver the new wind turbine project. How does this development align with the needs of the project development lifecycle. Identify if there are any lifecycle mismatches between the development of the organisation and the development of the wind turbine. Identify any potential risk areas and how would you address them
– Critical evaluation of the lifecycles. An integrated diagram incorporating the five lifecycles and the interdependencies between them. Critique the different lifecycles, any tailoring and issues/risk between them using your knowledge and experience and also external references. This can be marked up on the diagram, however, make sure it is easy for the reader to view and understand.
– Conclusions. Present a simple summary of your findings and elaborate on the findings. You must strive to make second order reflections about your findings, that is, reflections on your initial reflections.
– References. Make sure you present all your references in a consistent formal style.
The bullets above are a guide indicating the type of content expected in each of the sections, but feel free to interpret the headings as you see fit. In your work, as for all masters-level work, make sure you critically reflect on what other people have written on your chosen subject, and reference published material using a standard approach for referencing (see Programmes handbook section 13.13).

5. Evidence: Empirical knowledge & use of examples 10%

Page limit 10, one of which may be A3 for large drawings.

You must follow the standard document specification described in Section 13.11 of the Programmes Handbook.
Use the standard assignment template available from the Programme Moodle which is already set up to this specification.
Do not include anything that could be used to identify you easily (e.g. name or initials) in the filename or within the document. Only use your candidate code.

Midday Friday 3rd March 2023 for students from all programmes.

Assessment Criteria
Marking criteria are outlined above. The full Taught Module Assessment Rubric can be found on the Programme Moodle. The overall mark for the coursework will follow the classification guidelines in Table 1.
Common causes of lost marks
Not reading the question carefully. Not answering the question(s) asked.
Submissions that are significantly less than the advised word limit; these tend to comprise points that lack explanation or any depth / strength of argument.
Unjustified sweeping statements. Points made in your argument should be supported by appropriate references.
Bullet lists without context or discussion.
Copying out large chunks of text from sources, which tends to reduce the amount of student’s own analysis and argument.
PLAGIARISM – please make sure that you are familiar with the guidelines.
