BREI0008 Modern Economics and Finance for Real Estate
Assessment Brief 2021-2022
This assignment, to be completed in both groups/teams for presentation on the final day of the
module and then to follow on with individual essays, is centred on the role of real estate in the
context of economic growth and/or regeneration.
First, your attention is drawn to the deliverable requirements of this assessment. Following this, the
tasks required to be completed will be set out.
Deliverables required:
1. You will be allocated into groups. These groups should then seek to become a united team (all
teams members working for the good of the team). To help with this each group/team must
come up with a group/team name.
2. Each group/team will work to deliver a presentation on the afternoon of day 4 of the module
(Friday 14th January 2022) using MS PowerPoint that is to last no more than 10 minutes. Note,
all presentations that last longer than 10 minutes will be stopped at precisely 10 minutes.
Each group/team member will be required to upload an identical copy of their group/team
presentation to Turnitin no later than 1200 on Friday 14th January.
3. Each group/team will also work on a one-page team ‘storyboard’ to be submitted to Moodle
by each member of each group/team no later than 17:00 one week after the module
concludes. This storyboard is to be pictographic (with annotation as necessary) on one side of
A4 and narrative on the second side and is to allow consideration of how the team strategized
and developed its presentation and to capture the key learning generated for the team and
for each individual. Note, side one must include a flowchart of how the team went from
receipt of the assignment brief to the delivery of the final presentation. Evidence of all
group/team members being involved in the creation of this storyboard must be included. A
minimum of 10 point font size is to be used.
4. An individual essay is to be submitted by noon on Thursday 17th February.
Task #1:
First, you are to decide upon an agreed single option from the following instruction: Using an
internet search engine of your choice (e.g. Google) you are to conduct a search using the following
search string where you choose one of the words in the square [ ] brackets: “[University OR
Research and Development (R&D) facility OR Education OR Hospital OR Health] led [urban OR
economic] growth”. Second, you are then to consider no more than the first 15 (fifteen) ‘hits’
returned by the search engine.
Note on Task #1 for the individual essay: you can either choose to stay with the same choice made
by your group/team or you may choose to vary the search options
Task #2:
You are to select a real case from one of these ‘top results’ to focus on.
Note on Task #2 for the Group/Team: for the presentation you are to explain a selected case and set
it within its economic and financial context. Relevant background economic and financial data will be
expected to be provided (see Task# 3.1)
Task #3:
You are to set the case you have selected in two contexts:
1. A economically and financially related data context. This will involve you looking
at both the location-based data and the historically based data connected to the
area/district/region/nation of your case. Note, the use of the software
‘Macrobond’ is encouraged as this will be featured as part of the module.
2. Relevant theory drawn from the appendix that explains the decision to spend
the money on the case you have selected.
Note on Task #3.2 for the Group/Team: for the presentation your group/team is to outline what
modern theory of economics would appear most useful to help both explain your selected case and
prove useful in other, similar contexts and situations.
Note on Task #3.2 for the individual essay: for your essay you will be expected to summarise the
theory or theories selected and explain the process of it/their selection.
Task #4:
You are then to reflect on what this case tells us (the wider and interested audience of scholars and
practitioners) about the rationale for such expenditure.
End of assignment brief
For details on the durations/lengths and hand-in dates you should refer to the module guide, which
is to be found on the module’s Moodle page.
