ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION: A key part of communication in economics in an academic or
professional setting is presenting your research, findings, and proposals. In this assessment, you are
asked to present the information in your academic essay in a 10-minute presentation using
presentation slides to communicate the information. The slides must be created using a LaTeX based
platform – Scientific Workplace/Beamer, Lyx/Beamer – and must be submitted in a pdf.
How many slides should you have “2 minutes per slide” is a good rule of thumb, but feel free to
break this rule. For example, you may wish to use a couple of slides that make a quick point. Or you
may take 3-4 minutes on a slide with several touchpoints such as explaining a graph or infographic,
etc. Bottom line: make sure you practice your presentation multiple times so you know you can get
through it at a good, engaging pace in just about (but under) 10 minutes.
One of the slides you present can be the infographic that you will produce for the professional essay
assessment.
The presentation will be prepared in two steps. First, you will submit a draft of their presentation
slides, through the assignment link on Canvas. The slides will be reviewed by a tutor, and go through
a peer review session in class when you will present your slides to multiple classmates in tutorials.
Considering this feedback, you should revise your slides appropriately.
Second, you will give their presentation in lecture, in week 11, 12, or 13, on Zoom. Please be sure to
familiarize yourself with how to “share screens” in Zoom. This will be followed by a short Q&A
session with the audience. Class members will be expected to ask questions or provide comments in
response to the presentation. Other class members may be randomly selected to provide a
comment on the presentation, if necessary.
Academic Honesty and Plagiarism: The presentation is explicitly linked to the academic essay,
because the assignment is to present content from that essay. Hence it is not self-plagiarism or
“recycling” to re-use any content from the academic essay, in the presentation. You do not need to
cite the essay, in the presentation. However, things you cited in essay should be re-cited in
presentation, and any new outside content should be cited according to the usual citation policies.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: There are two deadlines associated with this assessment. The first to get
feedback and the second the date you actually present.
First draft of slides (10 marks): Due Tuesday, 28 April 5:00 PM
The first draft of slides requires an online submission through Canvas. This is so that students can
receive feedback from the tutors. There will then be a peer review workshop that follows soon after.
Live presentations (20 marks): Due week 11, 12, and 13
The presentations will be held in week 11, 12, and 13. The ordering of when your presentation
occurs will be by random assignment.
GRADE WEIGHT: 26% of the course grade, with four aspects:
1. First draft of slides graded online (3 points).
2. Completion of post-presentation reflections and surveys (3 marks).
3. Presentation (20 points). 20% of the presentation mark will come from the clarity of the
argument (ability to motivate and communicate an argument that is appropriate for the
audience), 25% will come from the evidence presented (ability to arrange evidence in
support of the main argument), 25% will come from the quality of the presentation
slides and how they are presented, 20% will come from other aspects of the quality of
presentation (clarity of communication, pace, finishing within the allotted time, etc),
10% will come from handling and responding to questions after the presentation. The
grading sheet for this part of the assessment is attached.
