SUMMATIVE: individual Research Report (100% of marks)
You will be asked to undertake a research task based on an industry sector relevant to your course of study. From within the industry sector, you will be asked to nominate one company as the focus of the research exercise. The task will be to gather as much relevant information as possible from a variety of sources.
From the information gathered you are individually required to analyse your chosen company and present in the following format.
THE REPORT IS MARKED AS FOLLOWS (USING STEP MARKING)
Introduction and market (10%)
What does the company do, what is their USP, history, introduce the company to the reader. What is the market size and share for their products, what is the companies market share compared to competitors, who are the customers. Should include graphs and pie charts in this section. Be concise, don’t waste too many words.
Analysis (30%)
CHOOSE ONE of PESTLE, Porters Five Forces or SWOT to analyse the company. What are the biggest issues Important to give an indication which are likely to be the most important factors, include data where possible and reference each piece of information to give it credibility. Do not cut and paste info from other sites (such as essay sites) for your models, you should use information/data from a number of sources.
Finance (30%)
From the company’s financial data (Can use data from FAME, Macrotrends, the companies website or elsewhere is fine) to see how key figures such as net profit and key ratios change over time – can they be related to each other or real world events. How do they compare with other companies in the industry. Show graphs or tables in here for comparison. What real world events are driving those figures and what do you conclude from the figures.
Conclusions and Recommendations (15%)
Briefly conclude what you have found and suggest what the company should do in future to maximise its potential based on what you have found (especially in your analysis section). This section can turn a good report into an excellent one.
Presentation (15%)
Does it read well, have cover and contents page, good use of graphs, tables etc, free from spelling mistakes, font changes etc. Has a good range of references been used. This type of report would be expected to contain about 30 references – some academic but many news reports, databases such as Mintel, websites etc. Please do not use “essay” sites (even if you reference), and if you use Wikipedia, please go to the original source and reference that.
Deadline
The deadline for the assignment is Friday 9th December 11.00am 2022. We are not able to give extensions, so if you have mitigating circumstances please contact your school. Penalties are applied to late submissions so don’t leave submission until the last minute!
Word Count
The word limit is 2,000 words, plus references. Tables containing numbers do not count towards the word limit, but tables containing words do. References in-text and in the reference list do not count towards the word limit.
Referencing
It is compulsory to reference any sources used – with in text citations and a list of references at the end of your work. These do not count as part of the word count. Harvard style is preferred, but any recognised system is fine.
This adds weight to your arguments as well as avoiding potential plagiarism issues. A report would be expected to contain approximately 30 references
