Assessment 3 Briefing Document Supplementary
Overview
The purpose of this essay is for you to demonstrate the value of undertaking a systems analysis to explore a particular case. The essay consists of three parts, which have several sub-components. The three parts are worth 10 marks each. There is an overall mark for referencing accuracy: 5 marks. The assessment is marked out of 35 and weighted at 35%. As this is the supplementary, if you pass your final mark will be 50PS.
The total word count is 2500 words including all parts of the assessments. Indicative word counts for each section are provided (except for Part III as this will vary substantially depending on each person). Additionally, there is an academic source requirement for each question: please stick to this (i.e. do not go higher or lower). Please ensure that you follow the questions: there is no need for an introduction/conclusion as the questions are designed to serve as these.
Tips
Please ensure for any graphics/maps that you use some form of software for designing any map (i.e. not hand drawn).
There is a high degree of subjective analysis (e.g. Part III Q2): is it up for you to critically reflect on this and choose the interpretation you wish to make of this.
Please combined all files into one word document: this includes any maps and the table discussed in Part III. You may wish to use alternative layout options in word (i.e. landscape/portrait mode). Please refer to this source to help.
Essay Questions
You are required to undertake a systems analysis on the following case:

Part I (500 words). 10 marks
(1)Provide a brief overview of the case, using at least 2 news articles/other appropriate sources including the article listed above. 300 words
(2)Explain what a reductionist analysis may look like in this case, and why a systems approach is more beneficial. Use two academic references in this question. 200 words.

(4)Part II (1000 words). 10 marks
Please choose ONE of the following two questions
(1)Undertake a systems analysis using SD as the methodology:
a.Problem Articulation
b.Dynamic Hypothesis
c.Causal Loop Diagram/s. Note: this counts as 400 words.
OR
(2)Undertake a systems analysis using SSM as the methodology:
a.Analyses 1, 2 and 3
b.Rich Picture. Note: this counts as 400 words.
c.Purposeful Activity Model (root definition, conceptual model of a particular process/intervention)
Please provide one or two paragraphs at the start of this Part II justifying why you have used this particular methodology (using two academic references to support this).
Part III (1000 words). 10 marks
Reflect on your answers to Part I and Part II by undertaking a reflection using critical systems heuristics (CSH):
(1)Use the provided table to answer the 12 boundary judgement questions
(2)Briefly discuss what you have found out from undertaking this reflection. Use two academic sources to support this answer.
