Assignment:
Write a literature-based assignment on a topic related to
leadership and management in Education. It should be more than
descriptive; it should be analytical and critical.
This assessment is worth 100% of the module mark
Word Count / Equivalent*: 3000 words
Word Count: This is the number of words from the start of your work, excluding any cover page, to the last
sentence and will include all quotes and authors’ names acknowledged within the main body of the text. It
does not include your list of References or any appendices. Please remember that there are penalties for over
length work and work submitted late.
Submission date: On or before: 11th January 2024 by 16:00
Notes:
This assignment must be uploaded to the correct submission portal on the module’s Blackboard page
by 16:00 on the due date or a penalty may be applied (see “FSSHUB: Faculty Student Hub” Blackboard
for details);
IMPORTANT: You are strongly advised to submit your work in PDF format.
In Microsoft Office, you can do this by choosing the ‘save as…’ option and then selecting .pdf. You
should also make sure you convert your file to PDF if it was created using Open Office (where your
original file will have a .odt file extension). Submitting .odt files to Turnitin may result in images /
graphs being stripped from your submission.
This work is expected to adhere to the following Programme requirements for submission (at least 1.5
line spacing; word processed; word count clearly indicated; font Sans Serif e.g. Lucida Sans 10; page
numbers on each page including the references and appendices. Marks may be deducted for not
following these requirements.
Learning Outcome 1:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of leadership and management theories/
approaches, policy and research.
Specific guidelines relating to this learning outcome:
The students are expected to submit a well-focused piece of work which demonstrates a high level
of understanding of the relevant theories and concepts in their discussion areas. The assignment
should show good subject knowledge, drawing on a wide range of national and/or international
sources –e.g. theoretical & empirical evidence, policy- to construct well-reasoned arguments.

Learning Outcome 2:
Demonstrate subject specific intellectual and research skills
Specific guidelines relating to this learning outcome:
The students are expected to critically analyse educational leadership and management concepts
and reflect on the broader education policy contexts & issues related to your discussed topic (e.g.,
leadership and management models, teacher leadership, leadership and trust, motivation,
teachers’ professional development etc). They should engage in a debate about what policy implies;
what research evidence shows; and, how relevant concepts are applied in order to influence the
learning process. An efficient level of critical evaluation and reflection is required.
Learning Outcome 3:
Develop a line of argument
Specific guidelines relating to this learning outcome:
The students should show a developed ability to analyse and synthesise literature-based data
derived from different sources, following a process of a critical dialogue with the topic. The latter
will help students position themselves in the leadership literature and make good use of their own
voice. The writing should demonstrate a clear line of argument throughout the text.

Points expressed with fluency;
Well-referenced arguments (e.g., in-text citations and reference list should consistently
follow Harvard or APA referencing conventions throughout your work);
Presentation: well-structured assignment; good signposting; appropriate citation style;
consistent referencing conventions;
Outstanding knowledge of established principles / concepts and evidence of extensive
reading (Guidance for grading assignments at Level 5).
