Assignment Brief
Assignment (100%): a 4000-word critical analysis of an education policy that concerns educational leadership directly or indirectly. This policy should ideally be formulated at the level of the institution in which you are located in practice. The analysis should contain two broad elements:
1.Identification of key features and analysis of their meaning (80%)
oThe policy context.
oThe policy focus.
oThe policy aims and objectives.
oThe policy problem and its construction.
oThe discourses that the policy draws on.
oWhose interests are advanced and whose are marginalised
oThe policy actors.
oThe role of leaders and leadership.
oPolicy enactment.
oThe impact or outcomes of the policy.
2.Critical evaluation of the influence of the policy on your practice and thinking (20%)
In this assignment we are asking you to focus on a particular policy that concerns or has influenced educational leadership and that you can speak to from your own professional experience within your organisation. From the bullet points above you can see the different elements we would encourage you to consider when structuring your assignment and developing the (critical) discussion on which the assignment will be based.
You should refer back to the learning materials from the unit that cover much of this and also your own supplementary and additional reading in this sphere to help with your thinking and writing.
Remember also that this is very much a critical reflection and so you are NOT expected to undertake any fieldwork for this assignment. You may refer to secondary data sources (e.g. policy documents) but you should not be collecting any primary data.
The first part of the assignment should include reference to and engagement with the scholarly debates relating to policy and leadership. So you will need to spend some time describing the policy but also discussing and interpreting it in line with the focus of your work.
For the second part of the assignment you should focus specifically on the practical implications of the policy you have focused upon and how it has (or has not) changed/shaped your leadership practice within your institution.
