Module Learning Outcomes Being Assessed
To critically evaluate approaches to the strategic management of people in organisations
To explain how HRM can contribute to improvement of organisational performance
To explain the objectives and nature of specific areas of strategic HRM practices
To critically evaluate the tensions and dilemmas associated with strategic HRM
Task (attach a separate briefing document if required) You are required to produce one essay submission of 2,300 words AND a reflective statement of between 200 and 500 words.
Subject. Taking one organisation write an essay. You can choose GCS or any other firm you want to examine:
(1) Suggest the most important value proposition among the three value propositions (or value disciplines: Treacy & Wiersema, 1993). Explain why it is most important by analyzing its business strategy (20%);
* Treacy, M., & Wiersema, F. (1993). Customer intimacy and other value disciplines. Harvard Business Review, 71(1), 84-93.
(2) With a strategic-fit approach, evaluate how its current HRM systems support (or don’t support) the delivery of the key value proposition (40%);
(3) Based on the evaluation of its current HRM practices, make three recommendations with regard to its HRM systems and explain how your recommendations would contribute to the improvement of its organisational performance with reference to a theoretical framework – either ‘Human Resource Advantages’ model or ‘the strength of the HRM system’ model (40%).
Please remember that your recommendations need creative thinking and at the same time your key arguments need to be sound and supported by the theoretical framework you choose.
Case organisation of your choice. You can choose any organization – including GCS – that you know about its business and HRM to some degree (e.g. your previous placement organization, a future employer which you want to work with).
Reflective statement. For the reflective statement you need to write key lessons you have learned from this module, which are important to you. The reflective statement will be evaluated as an ‘evidence of reflection on the lessons learned through the module’, one of the marking criteria of the coursework.
Guidelines/Details of How to Prepare Your Submission Four tutorials would be delivered to support your coursework.
Tutorial 1-3: Cover each of the three coursework questions based on group work with GCS case. You need to prepare one page note which includes the key points of your provisional answer to each coursework question based on GCS case.
Tutorial 4: Essay clinic session – review and assessment of your own essay outline. You need to bring your essay outline for a review.
Feedback on group work in tutorials: Students as a group will be required to present their discussion outcomes in tutorials and feedback on the presentations will be given to improve the performance of coursework.
The assessment criteria to be used for marking this piece of work
Refer to the marking criteria rubric at the end of this document.
Self-Regulation: Make sure That You… Prepare and attend all the tutorial sessions.
Three Key Pieces of Advice Based on the Feedback Given to the Previous Cohort who Completed This Assignment When you analyse the firm’s HRM practices, you don’t need to review too many of them. You may focus on 2-3 practices for the analysis.
Suggesting more specific recommendations would be helpful – e.g. how performance management practices should be changed specifically to support the value proposition of customer intimacy
You need to justify/explain how your recommendations can contribute to the firm’s performance with the theory (a strategic-fit approach) you used for the second question.
