POLICING AND SOCIETY SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS 2023-24
Deadline: 12 noon Thursday 2 May 2024 Word count: 3000 words (+/- 10%)
PICK ONE OF THE FOLLOWING
1.What are the legacies of colonialism and colonial governance on contemporary policing Support your empirical discussion using TWO CASE STUDIES: e.g. Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, India, Hong Kong, Philippines, Canada etc.
2.What is the relationship between public trust in the police and police legitimacy and how do spectacular forms of police violence impact this relationship Discuss with reference to both cases of David Carrick (UK) and Tyre Nichols (USA). Use academic sources, do not rely on newspapers.
3.You are appointed as a consultant by the London Metropolitan Police. This department is seeking to implement police reforms, drawing upon the Procedural Justice Theory. Demonstrate your understanding of this theory, its strengths and weaknesses, and then offer recommendations on how the PJT can be implemented in the Met Police. In which aspects of policing and policework can the PJT be implemented and why (e.g., stop and search, police presence in schools, responding to young people, responding to domestic abuse, etc. You may pick other aspects of police work too).
4.Is there a connection between police militarization and corruption Support your analysis theoretically and empirically.
5.Critically explore the relationship between policing, protests, and ‘institutional racism’, drawing upon both the 1980s Brixton riots and the 2011 London riots and their legacies.
6.Should we reform, defund, or abolish the police Answer by discussing ONE country, state, or city.
SOME ADVICE
1. Make an ARGUMENT (develop a thesis statement) in your introductory paragraph. Give a roadmap in the introductory paragraph of what your essay will demonstrate/argue/evidence.
2. STRUCTURE your essay well (use subheadings where needed). Have a clear introduction and conclusion.
3. REFERENCE properly and consistently (no Wikipedia entries, dictionaries, or encyclopaedias, do not use random websites or YouTube; please use books, peer-reviewed journal articles, only use news if commenting on the media reaction). Use the refencing guidelines!
4. Read widely to show you have understood KEY CONCEPTS and frameworks. You are encouraged to read across and beyond the module. Consult the required/further readings recommended in the Module Handbook to start. Use Google Scholar to go beyond the reading lists.
5. EVIDENCE your claims well (using case studies, statistics, other data, policy reports, etc. where possible).
6. More advice available in the module handbook.
7. Consult the Warwick/Sociology website for mitigating circumstances if needed.
