Assignment 3
A pitch of your GIS project
What this assignment is about
Assuming that your tender has been short-listed by the client, your group has been invited by the client to pitch the
project in an oral presentation. The group nominates you, as an individual, to deliver this pitch.
The pitch is produced as a video and uploaded by each student. Submission deadlines are published in LMS. As in any
commercial tendering process, the client sets the deadline, which is hard and non-negotiable.
What you will do
You consider carefully the client’s specifications (“a 2-minute video” that covers your “interpretation of the client’s
needs”, and the “specific offerings of the tender”, addressing the “client’s selection board” – experts!).
The web has plenty of recipes to pitch, which are highly recommended to consult for this assignment, but with care.
Do not fall in the trap of pure marketing: Remember that the purpose of this pitch is convincing a critical client to
choose your tender among the competing tenders (and, as common in professional practice, you do not know the
other tenderers). So, tell them why they should choose your project design, and do this with technical competence
required to make them confident.
Submission
Make sure your video is in mp4 and uses a common codec – check that it is playing in LMS.
Your presentation in such a short time requires a condensation of the essence of your tender document. Plus, you
cannot use slides here – a pitch is a personal presentation, usually in front of the client, but here in front of the
camera. You can only use a suited background picture for your presentation if you find this useful.
Submissions between 1’45” and 2’30” are totally fine. Submissions shorter than 1’45” will be accepted but have not
made the best use of the time available. Submissions longer than 2’30” will not be watched beyond the 2’30’’ time
point.
Each student must submit a pitch – this is an individual assignment. Submission deadlines are published in LMS. In line
with any professional tendering, no late submissions are accepted. However, your supervisor does recognize cases of
hardship covered by the special consideration process1
.
Special consideration: According to faculty policy, applications for special consideration in assignments up to 25
points must go directly to the subject coordinator. This assignment is an individual assignment worth 10 points.
How this assignment will be assessed
This assignment is worth 10 points.
Assume that an average pitch in the class receives an average mark, and that an outstanding mark is exceptionally rare
(“outstanding”).
The assessment criteria are provided in the following three rubrics. Since a report may not meet all the criteria in one
category, the markers are instructed to choose the best fitting category.
Coverage – the ‘what’ (0…4)
4 Comprehensive
Covers the full project (the challenge and the proposed solution) with no critical gaps. Reflective
and considerate on the project design. Convincing integration of project feasibility and risk
management, and potential further opportunities.
3 Strong
Covers the full project (the challenge and the proposed solution) with no critical gaps.
Integration of project feasibility and risk management. While answering the critical questions, it
may maximally allow for questions on the balance between items.

2 Solid
Covers the full project (the challenge and the proposed solution) with no critical gaps.
Integration of project feasibility and risk management. The board may have questions though.
1 Weak
Covers the project (the challenge and the proposed solution), the project feasibility and risk
management, but the board may have questions on assessments or gaps.
0 Unsatisfactory
Coverage shows obvious gaps or imbalances that cost the trust of the client’s tender selection
board.
Competence of team – the ‘why you’ (0…3)
3 Convincing
A full understanding of the technical requirements within this project, and how these are
matched by the technical approaches and the group’s technical competence. Group work
competence is integrated in a meaningful way. Both technical and group work competence of
the group are evident and relevant. Overall, showing a set of competences that is immediately
convincing the client’s selection board.
2 Solid
An understanding of the technical requirements within this project, and how these are matched
by the technical approaches and the group’s technical competence. Group work competence is
mentioned, and both technical and group work competence are evident. In principle convincing,
so the board may have only minor questions that do not risk the trust of the board.
1 Weak
Some understanding of the technical requirements within this project, and how these are
matched by the technical approaches and the group’s technical competence. Technical or group
work competence may lack evidence or may be overdone. Overall, the board may have
questions that put the trust into the project at risk.
0 Unsatisfactory
In the eyes of the board, a lack of understanding, significant gaps, or gross technical or
judgemental errors.
Presentation style (0…3)
3 Convincing
Timing impeccable. Absolutely grounded enthusiasm. Strong voice and body language.
Confident.
2 Strong
Timing within acceptable limits. Presentation with a tendency into either the mere factual or the
enthusiastic, but not over the limits. Clear voice.
GEOM20013 | Assignment 3 Page 5 of 6
1 Weak
An in principle acceptable presentation that suffers from at least one of these issues: borderline
in timing, overdoing either the technicalities or the sales pitch, or weak in voice or presence.
0 Failing
A presentation that suffers from at least one of these issues: outside of time limits, lost in
details, enthusiastic with no base, hard to understand, or apparent lack of confidence.
