Submission length: 1000 Words
The purpose of this task is to develop skills in transforming, adapting and editing text-types for different genres or contexts of delivery–and to reflect on the editorial skills needed to make these transitions. Adaptation is a skill that all editors require, particularly in the digital age, and this assignment asks you to think carefully about how and why editors (and writers) need to modify texts for different audiences–and the sorts of decisions they make as they engage in the process of adaptation.
Topic of Reflection
Unlike previous assignments, where you were considering how editors intervene in the text production process, for this assignment you must revise and edit as a form of adaptation. This assignment asks you to adapt a recent short piece of professional or public writing (tweet, social media post, meme, etc.) from one context to another. Your chosen text should have a recent publication date, i.e., no earlier than January 1 2024, and it should be a short piece of writing, to make the adaptation process easier. The focus here is not so much on the writing, since most of the writing has already been done, but on editing the existing text for a new genre.
For example, you might draw on a series of social media posts to craft a short speech or media release/public announcement on the same topic. Or, you could adapt a short section/paragraph of a professional article into a poster that features mainly images. Or you might adapt a paragraph of your favourite book into a format suitable for children. You might adapt a Facebook post into a tweet or an email into a text.
You should use the information from the original source for the content of your submission, but you can work creatively with additional visual, design, or other elements to achieve the adaptation. You may also need to reword the original text slightly (or change its tone) to ensure the content is appropriate for the new genre.
You should consider, too, whether/how AI technology can be used to help editors adapt texts across genres. Can a machine replace a human being How might editors use AI for purposes of adapting text from one genre to another What might they ask AI technology to produce on their behalf You might include these considerations in the reflections section (on what must be considered in making successful adaptations) or in a brief concluding statement. There is no need for an elaborate discussion. One or two sentences will suffice to demonstrate your awareness of AI in the editing process.
Medium of delivery
For this assignment, you will need to produce a 1000-word reflective essay that includes:
a description of the short text you have chosen, its medium (where you found it: newspaper, book, internet, etc.), target audience, and purpose. In other words, who was the original text written for Where was it published, and what effect was it meant to have on its readers (approx. 100 words)
a description of how you developed this short text into a new genre/format. What editorial decisions did you make Did you change the language, level of formality, tone, etc. Did you punctuate differently or use more images for effect Did you play around with colour and font Why What do these changes say about the new genre (approx. 300 words–or 1/3 of the assignment)
a reflection/conclusion on how the textual elements (language, style, formatting) of each genre differ and what must be considered in making successful adaptations. (approx. 300 words–or 1/3 of the assignment)
the newly adapted text. Please note the remaining 300 words of the task (the final 1/3 of the assignment) are allocated to this work, but you might not necessarily write 300 new words. We are allowing word count for the editing effort as well. If you do not use the full 300 words in this section and wish to apply additional words to other sections, that is fine–provided that the assignment does not exceed 1000 words–but not necessary.

Resources to Assist You
Since this is a new assignment, we are unable to provide past student samples. We have instead included below several great resources on creating digital documents/objects. Assignment 3 FAQs
Q: I’m confused where in our writing we should include: “You should consider, too, whether/how AI technology can be used to help editors adapt texts across genres. Can a machine replace a human being How might editors use AI for purposes of adapting text from one genre to another What might they ask AI technology to produce on their behalf You might include these reflections in your conclusion.”
The sections that we should include in our writing include the following, and there does not seem to be a conclusion, or any section where the above would easily fit:
a description of the short text you have chosen, its medium (where you found it: newspaper, book, internet, etc.), target audience, and purpose.
300 words–or 1/3 of the assignment)
a reflection on how the textual elements (language, style, formatting) of each genre differ and what must be considered in making successful adaptations. (approx. 300 words–or 1/3 of the assignment)
The only place I can see it fitting is maybe in “what must be considered in making successful adaptations” but that already includes a lot of other things in the 300 words. How many words would we be expected to spend on the AI discussion And can we include some screenshots from AI chats
A: I’ve reworded the instructions to be clearer, but yes, it can fit in the reflection/conclusion section (within the allocated word count). Including screenshots is fine, and there’s no need for a long analysis—only a concise observational statement.
Q: Regarding the final 300 words for the newly adapted text – if I make a poster with, e.g., 100 words, I think it still means I have 700 words for the other sections
A: Yes, this is correct. If you do not write 300 new words, you may apply those words to extra sections if you wish, as long as the assginment does not exceed 1000 words. However, applying “leftover” word count elsewhere is not required, as explained in the instructions.
Q: I have a question about Assignment 3, in particular about the last component:
the newly adapted text. Please note the remaining 300 words of the task (the final 1/3 of the assignment) are allocated to this work, but you might not necessarily write 300 new words. We are allowing word count for the editing effort as well.
I’ve taken this to mean if I adapt the original text into, for example, a poster, and this poster doesn’t have many words on it, that this section will be quite a bit shorter than 300 words (and therefore the assignment as a whole will be shorter than 1000 words). Is that right
A: Yes, this is right. 300 words are allocated to this section, but we are allocating “words” to the actual task of converting the text from genre to another, as a way of recognising the effort involved in this. This section might not total 300 actual words, but the labour involved would be the equivalent of writing 300 words. Alternatively, as mentioned above, “leftover” word count can be applied to other sections of the assignment, if necessary, but this is not required.
Q: Would Insta post to poster work- is that okay, or are we expecting a bigger shift in adaptions
A: Yes, this would work, and no, the adaptations do not have to be drastic leaps from one genre to another. Insta to a poster would be fine, as would a Facebook post to a tweet or an email to a text. The genres are still different and require careful audience analysis and editing.
Q: I have three questions about Assignment 3.
1.If I want to turn the genre into a cartoon or a poster, what should I do with the last 300 words in the ‘medium of delivery: the newly adapted text’ part
2.If the cartoon or poster contains text, does it count as 300 words
3.3. Do the word count for the whole article must reach 900 words even if we chose cartoon or poster
A: Please note the remaining 300 words of the task (the final 1/3 of the assignment) are allocated to this task, but you might not necessarily write 300 new words. We are allowing word count for the editing effort as well. Any text in the cartoon or poster would be applied to the 300 words. As explained above, the entire word count may be lower if you do not use the entire 300 words in this section. That is ok, or you might apply “leftover” words to sections where you need more space. Either option is fine, as long as the assignment does not exceed 1000 words.
Q: Are references required for this assignment
A: The source texts that you are required to locate and analyse (as discussed in the assignment description) are all the sources you need for this assignment, and you must cite these, as well as the AI tool(s) you use to assist with the adaptation. However, if you consult any additional reference material on adaptation or the particular genres you’re working with, you will need to cite this.
