WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

Written assignment: Governance audit and report
-Submission: Deadline is 17th May 2024.
-You must submit an electronic copy through LEARN, no hardcopy is needed.
For this report you must choose a sport organisation. Your chosen sport organisation can be at any level, from an international federation to a local cricket club. It must be a sport organisation, though. It cannot be a governmental organisation (e.g. UK sport) or hybrid organisation (e.g. WADA). You can choose the organisation for a variety of motives, including your personal interest. Please bear in mind, though, that the type and size of organisation you chose will pose specific challenges to this assignment. For example, the amount of information available will be different if you do World Athletics than if you do your local running club.
VERY IMPORTANT: You cannot choose World Rugby or the International Cycling Union (UCI)
First, you must do a governance audit of the organisation by undertaking the following tasks:
-Do a stakeholder map of the ‘sport ecosystem’ in which your organisation is situated. Identify the stakeholders that interact with your chosen organisation and map their systemic interactions.
-Assess the governance structures of the organisation using one of the models used in the module (BIBGIS, SGO, ASOIF, National SGO).
Attach the results of these two tasks to your report as an appendix (this is compulsory).
Second, you should write a 2,000 words report based on your findings in the two tasks.
The assignment must be presented in an appropriate report style, NOT in essay format. It is important that you write your report as if you were working as a consultant for the organisation and you were going to present your findings to them.
The report must include at least the following sections:
Introduction
oPresent your chosen organisation.
oBriefly discuss the stakeholders map, with specific focus on issues of possible power conflict between stakeholders.
Results: Governance assessment
oBriefly summarise the results of the governance assessment. Evaluate the overall governance health of the organisation based on your results and justify this evaluation.
oBased on your analysis, identify examples of both good governance and bad governance within the organisation. In this section description is not enough, you need to identify which principle(s) of governance are affected by your example(s) and why it is good/bad governance. You are also expected to discuss the examples by linking them to the consequences and other secondary principles of good governance.
Recommendations
oRecommend and discuss realistic reforms to improve the organisation’s governance structures. Assess the feasibility and implementation barriers of your recommendations.
Your report must be a maximum of 2,000 words and you must provide a word count. No word extension allowed.
Figures, tables, list of references, executive summary, appendices, and front page are NOT included in the word count.
Footnotes, headings, sub-headings, etc. are included in the word count.
2,000 is a tight word limit. I am fully aware and I will mark your assignments in consequence. Logically, I do not expect you to assess every governance structure within the sport organisation of your choice. You are asked to select some of the most important examples of good and bad governance. I am interested in quality, not quantity. You need to demonstrate that you can recognise good/bad governance practices and that you can evaluate their consequences for the organization and for sport. I am not looking for a full description of the organisation’s governance. You are more likely to earn high marks if you engage in analysis rather than description. Just stating that a particular decision/policy is good governance is unlikely to give you high marks. You need to explain why such a policy demonstrates good governance, which structures make such a policy possible and what are the consequences of the decision for the organization itself and its wider stakeholders.
Your final submission should include (in this order):
Front cover with title and word count
Main body of the report (as explained above)
List of references
Appendix
oStakeholders map
oGood governance assessment scoring
Important information on writing a report
In this assignment you are required to write a report, not an essay. It is a different type of assignment. A report presents and discusses the results of a previous investigation. In this case you first have to do a governance audit of your chosen organisation, and then write the report. This is very similar to writing the results and discussion chapter of your dissertation after data collection.
It is important that you write your report as if you were a consultant for the organization and you are going to present the report to them.
Reports are informative, analytical and practical in nature. They are often preceded by an executive summary. Reports are written in a succinct, direct and sharp style, which is different to the way in which your write University academic essays. Reports are very clearly structured and the use of sections and headings is very important. The use of visual aids, such as figures and tables is also very important.

Formatting your report
The formatting of your assignment is also important. Therefore, be aware that your assignment MUST comply with the following:
-Text has to be justified, not aligned to the left
-Font size must be minimum of 12 pt.
-Line space needs to be, at least, 1.5 lines
-Margins need to be at least 2.5 cm.
-Pages must be numbered
Citations and bibliography
A full bibliography of the works cited must be attached to the end of your report. You will be penalised for poor referencing and lack of bibliographic details. So please take your time to familiarise yourself with the citation standards. References can follow the HARVARD or APA system. Whichever you use, just be consistent.
I would recommend you use a bibliography citation manager, such as Mendeley.

I will provide guidance on the assignment in class, in the seminars and on Learn.
You will find on Learn resources on report writing that I recommend you use.
In addition, I will also look at and discuss assignment structures of no more than 2 pages. You can send your 2-page structure up to two weeks before the deadline. In general, I am happy to discuss understanding of concepts and structures of assignments, so use me for specific advice about the subject. I will not help you choose an organisation to analyse, though. Please note that the onus is on you to produce work at a satisfactory level and a structure approved by me will only pass if the content is adequate. You greatly increase your chances of failure, however, if I do not see a structure.
