EXERCISE 2 (50 MARKS)
Consider the extract below and then address the following questions:
What communicative functions are served by code-switching
What is the relationship between ethnicity and code-switching
In the extract below, which communicative functions are being served by codeswitching, and what does the extract tell us about the relationship between codeswitching and ethnicity
You should write 900-1000 words.
The following extract is taken from Benjamin Zephaniah’s novel, Refugee Boy (2001). For
context, Alem and his father are seeking asylum in the UK, having been forcibly ejected from
Ethopia and Eritrea, where they lived. In this scene, from the start of the novel, Alem and his
father have just passed through passport control in a UK airport.
Note that the languages spoken in this extract are English and Amharic, which is the main
language spoken in Ethiopia. Translations of the Amharic phrases are provided beneath the
extract.
Alem jerked his father’s hand and stopped suddenly. “Abbaye, yaw teguru tekatlowal,”* he
said, brimming with excitement.
His father turned to him and spoke as if he was trying to shout quietly. “What did I
tell you From now on you must try to speak English, you must practise your English – all
right, young man ”
Alem panicked. “Ishi abbaye,”** he said.
His father’s response was swift. “English, I said.”
“Yes, Father.”
“Now what did you say ”
Alem looked back towards passport control. “Father, that man who looked at the
passports, what was wrong with him ”
*Father, you are not afraid
**Ok, father
