Coursework Brief:
This is a portfolio-based assessment. It seeks to provide you with an opportunity to engage in a critical investigation/
inquiry into a project of your choice.
The assessment for this module consists of:
Type of assessment (e.g., coursework,
exam, presentation, etc.)
Word length of coursework or
equivalent, or duration of exam
Percentage of the overall
assessment
Individual Portfolio Assignment 3,000 words 100%
The purpose of the assessment for this course is to test whether, and to what extent, you have reached the
learning outcomes (provided in the module handbook) for the course. You are required to demonstrate your
understanding of the application of key techniques of project management as well as a critical awareness of
some of the key issues that may affect projects and their successful execution.
Your assessment coursework consists of four parts: 1, 2, and 3
Part 1: Proposing a real-life project
You are required to propose a real-life project. The project can be defined at the business level (e.g. within
an organisation like a manufacturing firm, hospital, or university), local/regional level (e.g., city
infrastructure development), or national/international level.
MANG3034 2023_24 Semester 2 – Coursework Brief
In Part 1 of the portfolio, you should provide a proper overview of the background of the project that you
have proposed, and a clear description of the project’s objectives, scope, time, and risks.
This part should be around 600 words but may be supplemented by figures, charts, and tables (which are
excluded from the word count).
Part 2: Understanding the application of project management techniques
In Part 2 of the portfolio, you should develop your understanding of the project by using standard project
management tools and techniques. Apply any three of the following tools/techniques:
1. Project scope definition
2. Work Breakdown Structures
3. Project time estimation
4. Project cost estimation
5. Project Scheduling and critical path analysis
6. Reducing project time
7. Project progress control
8. Project performance measurement
For each of the techniques (listed above) that you use, you need to demonstrate the application of the
selected techniques in the project (e.g., if you choose “performance measurement”, specify the key
performance indicators of the project and how they should be measured).
Part 2 of the portfolio should be around 1200 words but may be supplemented by figures, charts, or tables
(which are excluded from the word count).
Part 3: Critical analysis of project management techniques
In Part 3 of the portfolio, you need to critically analyse and discuss how each technique, selected and
applied in Part 2, contributes to managing the project. The critical analysis may include, but not limited to,
the comparison and contrast of the benefits and challenges of implementing the technique, enablers and
barriers to implementing the techniques, and key requirements and drivers for implementing the technique.
To enhance your discussions in this part, you need to support your argument with theoretical or empirical
evidence from the literature. A good critical analysis in Part 3 needs at least five references from academic
sources.
Part 3 of the portfolio should be around 1200 words but may be supplemented by figures, charts, or tables
(which are excluded from the word count).
Nature of Assessment: This is a SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT. See ‘Weighting’ section above for the percentage that this

summary, title page, table of contents, tables, figures, in-text citations and section headings, if used. The relevant word
count excludes your list of references and any appendices at the end of your coursework submission.
You should always include the word count (from Microsoft Word, not Turnitin), at the end of your coursework
submission, before your list of references.

Word Count. This assignment will be marked anonymously, please ensure that your name does not appear on any part
