AssignmentInformation
The assignment consists of writing an informed 3,000 word research proposal in the area of social and/or educational concern that you plan to
investigate for the MEd Dissertation, showing an awareness of where the issue or area has been incompletely studied and identifying how to address
the gap in knowledge. Your proposal should start with a broad overview of the state of theory and research in the area identified, critically analyse
the existing knowledge in the area proposed and justify the significance of the proposed area of investigation for practice. It should then clearly
identify the proposed research questions, outline the methodology for data collection and analysis and give a reflective account of the ethical issues
anticipated. Finally, it should outline anticipated findings and identify how the study will contribute to improving practice and knowledge.
The proposal should refer where appropriate to the literature on research methods and include the following or equivalent sections:
Introduction (500 words*)
Area and topic
Purpose of research
Literature Review (1,000 words*)
Research Questions (50 words*)
Research Methodology (1,200 words*)
Research design
Sample and sampling
Data collection and analysis
Limitations and considerations
Ethical Statement (150 words*)
Significance (Or Contribution of Research) (150 words*)
*Values are approximate, and the structure may vary depending on whether you are planning an empirical, conceptual or literature-based study.
Assessment criteria
1. Present a detailed analysis of the purpose of the study supported by evidence from critically reviewed research literature.
(The introduction to the proposal should explain the research topic, its relevance as a focus for investigation in relation to evidence,
the problem or issue that is activating the study, and the aims that emerge. The review of literature should argue of the need for the
proposed study according to the existing research literature – the strengths, weaknesses, lack of consensus, or “gap” – narrowing to
towards the specific themes or variables defined in the research questions.)
2. Identify an appropriate aim and set of research questions which direct the study. (The research questions should emerge from
the review of literature, with clear analytical links to the analysis provided. The questions should be clear and concise, and relate to
one another, in articulating a progressive focus on the issue of concern. Two to four questions might be sufficient.)
3. Use skills of critical analysis and evaluation to justify the methodological approach for the research project, supported by
evidence from critically reviewed methods literature. (The methodology should provide some concise discussion of the
methodological theory underlying the practical work, whether the study will adopt an interpretivist, positivist, critical, or pragmatic
orientation, with some reflection on the knowledge claims that will result. The discussion should progress to an explanation of the
research design (e.g. quasi-experimental, mixed methods, case study, qualitative, quantitative), and why the design in question has
been selected. Reference to the methods literature will be essential to presenting a critical justification of the approach proposed.)

4. Evaluate and defend the key research methods proposed for the project, supported by evidence from critically reviewed
methods literature. (A clear account of the practical research process should be provided, including detail about the sampling, data
collection, data analysis, ethics, and limitations. The steps and process should provide a blueprint for the intended work, such that
another researcher might be in a position to understand the logic of and follow the steps for themselves. Reference to the methods
literature will be essential to presenting a critical justification of the techniques proposed.)
5. Expressed well throughout, with appropriate standards of academic and technical presentation (including APA7 referencing
conventions), and structured according to the main sections identified for the research proposal.
