Structural Engineering 3- Resit Assessment- 2024
A typical frame structure used for a residential building in Edinburgh is shown in Fig. 1. Each
perimeter beam supporting the slab is spanning between the columns and is of 8m length. Internal
beams supporting the slab are of 16m length and span in the width direction between the perimeter
columns. Total width of the building is 16m, while total length of the building is 30m. Height of each
bay is 4m.
Fig 1: Framed Structure.
Client has asked you to carry out a design for a typical beam and a column of the building and submit
a design report. For beams and columns, you are expected to use at least two materials out of
concrete, steel and timber in your designs. Your design should consider both serviceability and
ultimate limit state criteria as well as sustainability in design. In your report you are to clearly
present:
1. Loads acting on your structure (specifically on the critical beam and the critical column) (4%
of the total)
2. Load path and the bending, shear and axial force diagrams of the critical beam and the
column (10% of the total)
3. Intrinsic and extrinsic design parameters for your beam (3% of the total)
4. Beam design clearly explaining the assumptions (you are required to use the section analysis
methodology for flexural design of the beam) (30% of the total)
5. Intrinsic and extrinsic design parameters for your column (3% of the total)
6. Column design clearly explaining the assumptions (30% of the total)
7. Discuss the risk and safety concerns associated with design (10% of the total)
8. Propose the strategies to mitigate the risk and safety concerns associated with your design
(10% of the total)
All calculations must be presented clearly. For the section analysis, you are required to submit the
Excel (or Matlab or Python code) file you used for the calculations. Report should be type written and
no hand written pages will be marked.
