Question
Carbon pricing is a key policy mechanism used globally to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon
economy. In this essay, you are asked to analyze the evolution and effectiveness of carbon pricing
policies in the United Kingdom. In particular, you are asked to write an essay in which you:
a) Discuss the carbon pricing tools (carbon taxation and emissions trading systems)
currently employed in the UK. Analyze how the usage of these policy tools have evolved
over time.
b) Evaluate the relative advantages and disadvantages of emissions trading systems (ETS)
versus carbon taxation in a general context by analyzing their: (i) implementation
mechanisms, (ii) effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions, (iii) challenges in
implementation and effectiveness considering their various economic impacts.
c) Compare the UK’s carbon pricing policy tools with that of at least one other country of
your choice. In your comparison, assess how country-specific factors—such as
government’s role, institutional frameworks, and economic structure—have influenced
the selection and implementation of carbon pricing tools in these two countries.
Your analysis should draw on empirical evidence where possible and consider both the theoretical u
nderpinnings and practical outcomes of these policies.

Structure of the Essay
The clarity and structure of logical arguments will be important assessment criteria. Your
assignment is expected to have a self-contained structure and to have distinct parts for each
part. You are expected to use a formal written language, showing that you can effectively use
the necessary terminology.
You are expected to explain your statements in detail and always provide in-text references
whenever needed and add a reference list to the end of your essay.
In addition to the in-class readings, you are expected use other resources to support your
discussion and arguments such as research articles, policy reports by central banks and
international organizations (such as Bank of England, BIS, IMF, World Bank,…), books, news
articles, etc.
Using a well-structured sectioning format throughout the essay (e.g., sections, subsections,
and subsubsections if required) will help you to organize and transmit your ideas in a clearer
way
You are expected to have a title page with the “word count” information. The word count
excludes the words in tables, figures, and reference list.
Feedback method
Individual feedback will normally be provided via Moodle. Generic (class-level) feedback and grade
profiles will normally be posted on Moodle. Students can use academic staff office hours for
additional feedback on your work.

Formatting
You won’t be penalised if you don’t follow this good practice on formatting, but it will help your

It has been argued that……. (Smith, 1999).
If you use a direct quote, use quotation marks and cite the page number as well as the
author and date, i.e. (Smith, 1999, p. 4).
If you have two items by the same author in the same year, refer to one as ‘a’ and the other
as ‘b’, i.e. Smith (1999a) and Smith (1999b).

Generative AI
Generative AI offers many new opportunities for learning and the development of academic skill
although, like any technology, it must be used judiciously. Students should consider the data
protection and privacy issues that can be caused by using AI. Consider how your personal
information will be used before signing up to AI tools and ensure you read any data protection
policies before interacting with AI. You should not feel pressured into using AI tools if you are
uncomfortable with the data protection or privacy issues. Bear in mind that responses to AI queries
can be biased due to the inherent biases present in their training data. This can lead to unfair and
discriminatory responses.
Copying (including paraphrasing) AI responses to queries would be considered as plagiarism, as it
would for copying the response from any internet search.
