MSc Light & Lighting 2024–2025. Coursework BENV0060: Essay.
Investigate the extent to which the lit environment of school children, both indoors and
outside, could affect myopia onset and progression by the time they leave primary school,
aged 10-11.
You are asked to prepare an essay drawing on original published research on this topic. Context is
provided by Richard Hobday’s 2016 opinion price entitled: “Myopia and daylight in schools: a
neglected aspect of public health ”1
As part of this coursework you are required to participate in Simone Bonavia’s PhD experiment “The
influence of light distribution in the field of view on pupil response”. You should complete the
experiment as soon as possible, and no later than 7th April. As part of the coursework, you must
include a short reflection on the methodological pro and cons of such an experiment and it’s potential
relevance to myopia. You can find the QR code to book an experiment slot below:
In the essay you may:
Refer to lighting characteristics which could matter, including specific reference the possible
relevance of the distribution of light in space.
Mention daily routines, for example break times.
Discuss methodological advantages and disadvantages of existing research in this field.
Consider the possible impact of electromagnetic radiation beyond the visible spectrum.
Highlight any contradictory research and discuss.

State the relative importance of lighting alongside other relevant factors.
Present any implications for lighting design and assess how strong the evidence is to support this.
Discuss any limitations of commonly used daylight metrics in assessing lighting characteristics of
environments which could be relevant to myopia.
Mention facade materials such as glazing and shading and their potential influence on contrast, if
you think this could be relevant.
It is recommended that you carefully define the terms of the question to set a framework within which
to complete the essay. You will need to read original research papers and this will require you to make
a judicious selection of relevant material. You should provide evidence from papers you have read and
ensure that their findings are relevant to the context of your essay.
The essay should be up to 3000 words in .pdf format; you should include the Coursework title page
(available on the MOODLE module page) to include Module Code, Coursework title, UCL Candidate
Code and statement of word count.
The document is to be uploaded to Moodle by 11:00hrs on the hand-in date. The submission will be
run through Turnitin to check for plagiarism.
