CAPE5320M Multi-Scale Modelling and Simulation, Semester-2, 2025
Guidelines for CFD Coursework Report Writing and Marking Scheme
The CFD coursework report should contain the following essential sections in addition to usual elements of a technical report (e.g., front cover page, table of contents, nomenclature, list of references, etc):
Abstract [Marks 5]
1. Introduction (including engineering applications of “flow is a sudden expansion geometry”, main flow characteristics with reference to previous experimental/CFD modelling studies, and objectives of this coursework refereeing to the flow geometry with dimensions). [15]
2. Simulation Methodology (including governing equations solved, turbulence models used, numerical methods used, values of under relaxation factors used, boundary conditions used, levels of convergence achieved). [15]
3. Mesh Independence Tests (mesh sizes used and figures, demonstrate that results are sensibly independent of mesh sizes using the base case problem #1[a]). [10]
4. Simulation Results and Discussion
4.1 Base case simulation [5]
4.2 Effect of convective discretisation scheme [5]
4.3 Effect of turbulence modelling [5]
4.4 Effect of inlet air velocity [5]
4.5 Heat transfer in a confined air jet [10]
(Simulation results should be presented using appropriate graphs to show main flow characteristics. Results should be analysed and interpreted focusing on the following points: main features of the predicted flow for problem #1[a], and the effect of discretisation scheme (#1[b]), turbulence model (#1[c]) and inlet velocity (#1[d]) on the predicted flow, and flow and heat transfer characteristics for problem #2)
5. Validation of Simulation Results (The accuracy of the CFD predicted velocity distributions, pressure drop and one other important characteristics of the flow in problem #1 should be assessed against data available in literature and against theoretical calculations where possible, and flow field and temperature for problem #2 and appropriate conclusions should be drawn) [15]
6. Conclusions [5]
References
Style of presentation (including quality of graphs, formatting, figure/table captions and numbering, referencing, etc.) [5]
Page limit and style
A maximum of 15 pages (including figures, but excluding the cover page, table of contents, nomenclature and reference list; appendix is not allowed). The page count starts from the Abstract and finishes at the end of Conclusions. The report must be typed using 1.5 line spacing with margins of 2 cm on all four sides. A font size of 12 pt. for Times New Roman or 11 pt. for Arial is required. The main sections of the report mentioned above may be divided into two or more sub-sections as appropriate.
