Essay Content and Style: Selected Lessons
Learned
The marking scheme is a standard academic matrix “Comprehension – Analysis – Evaluation –
Academic Writing”.
Given are about dozen carefully selected examples of a very recently marked Fails (and a few
Distinctions) for the individual essays’ elements taken from a cohort at another MSc
programme.
Case 1: This student has almost surely prompted and copied ChatGPT or a similar LLM
application – and then continued doing so for the rest of the Assignment! Clear Fail.
Case 2: (Only a part of Table shown) A student did not check if all listed Fintech apps are indeed
made available in researched markets; not every EU or UK app is available across all EU and/or
certain non-EU countries. Easily checked by researching each app. Furthermore, the source of
estimated market size is not given, and a typical subscription price interval is not given.
This case is between Fail and Pass.
Case 3a: (Only a part of Section shown) About seven pages long document, but student did not
quote a single number or provide a single illustration or chart. A total lack of data evidence – the
essay is not convincing.
This case is close to Fail.
Case 3b: (Only a part of Section shown) Unlike (3a) above, this is using fresh data, and a clear
bar chart to illustrate the selected Fintechs.
This case is close to Distinction.
Cases 4a and 4b: (only final parts of two essays are shown) The analysis and conclusion isn’t
specific. You should not advocate the case for Fintech in general (today, for MSc level audience
it is assumed as a prerequisite, a general knowledge) but a specific Fintech case. Furthermore,
no references are given, and bibliography is missing.
Both essays are close to Fail.
Case 5: (only a part of the section shown) There was little need to outline a budget and/or
financial plan. It is much better to specify a Fintech hardware or software technological
component, product or service to be used. The exact numbers and plans will be required for
your last Group Project.
Mark: Pass.
Case 6: (only a part of the section is shown) An excellent example of referencing a specific
Fintech coming from a very different region – in fact, several equally good, rare finds, have been
given, indicating deep global research.
Mark: Distinction.
Case 7: (only a part of the section is shown) An excellent example of referencing relevant, fresh
data.
Mark: Distinction.
Case 8: (only beginning of the essay is shown) An excellent example of formatting. Clear,
focused language, Board-level quality.
Mark: Distinction.
