EART31101 – Guidance for Assessment 2 – individual report
Your completed individual report should be submitted by the deadline quoted on canvas (and in lecture 1). Late penalties will be applied for late submissions. Please include your Student ID in your report. If you cannot submit your work by canvas for some technical reason, please email your work (before the deadline) to Bart.vandongen@manchester.ac.uk explaining what went wrong (with screenshots if applicable).
Your report should be on the theme given to your group. One person from your group should also submit a group introduction to the collection of individual reports within your group’s theme. This should be submitted through canvas as part of the same file by the first person in the group (see below) The introduction should not exceed 1500 words.
When submitting your work, you should agree what order you want me to read your reports in, such that the collection of reports presents a coherent package. Please use a filename that reflects this order for your group – e.g. “StudentID_atmospheric_group_1” and then use 2, 3, 4 etc to indicate the order they should be read in.
Your individual report should be no more than 2250 words and should contain an abstract (max 250 words), introduction and summary section. References, figures (and figure captions) and tables, do not count toward the word count. A penalty may be applied for exceeding the word count.
A note on plagiarism: Your work should be fully referenced and cited, in Harvard citation format. If you use figures or tables from other sources, be sure to cite sources where they are used and include a full reference to the source in your references section. Paraphrasing text from other sources (e.g. changing a few words from another source) can indeed count as plagiarism – you should always cite any sources where you discuss the scientific content they may contain. Any text that is not accompanied by a citation will be assumed to represent your own primary work or original thought – if it is found that anything you have written is substantially taken directly from another source (without citation), this is plagiarism. If in doubt, cite! If anything you write is your personal opinion, or primary work, it is good practice to make this clear in your report. Where plagiarism is suspected, this may be passed to an academic malpractice panel and penalties may be applied.
FAQs:
Q – Should I make my own graphs/plots/graphics
A – If you want to, you can; and you should be sure to explain that what you have created is your own work and cite any data sources used. However, as this assessment is a literature review primarily, it is not expected that your own graphics are necessary for this work.
Q – Who should submit the introduction part
A – Your group should agree who should submit this. This should accompany the first report that you want me to read. That student should submit the groups introduction as a preface to their own individual report and clearly separate the two elements (e.g. titled “introduction” and “individual report”), as parts of a single file and submit this via Canvas. The whole group will receive the mark awarded for the group introduction.
Q – What referencing style should I use
A – Harvard style please. Here is a useful guide – https://www.scribbr.co.uk/referencing/harvard-style/
