
Assignment 1 (40%): Analysis of an Interior Colour Application.

Select an interior space that you can visit. Do not choose a space with a neutral colour pallet. Spaces that you might consider are a library, foyer, waiting room, bank, food court, public memorial, art gallery, museum, restaurant, etc. If you cannot visit a space, please email your lecturer Melody Willis melody.willis@sydney.edu.au to arrange an alternative.
Complete the following information:
Section 1 – Identification of selected space.
Note: Full sentences are not required for responses in sections 1 and 2.
1a) Name, location, approximate year of the interior design or renovation, demographics of the users of the space, and the function of the space.

Section 3 – Symbolic and cultural associations
- Write a concise paragraph about the most noticeable colour (in your selected space) and potential relevant symbolic and/or cultural associations (of this colour). Conduct scholarly/credible research to support your ideas. Include at least one citation from your research.

[Hint: If your most noticeable hue was red and your selected space is the children’s section of a library located in Sydney, you could examine research that supports the idea that red is a preferred colour for young children and can assist in mental development. Bonus hint: It is better to have a small number of examples with their relevance explained in detail, than many examples that are not well explained]
Section 4 – Critique of the colour design.
- Imagine you are a recent design graduate. Artichoke Magazine https://architecturemedia.com/magazines/artichoke/ is creating an article about colour design in interiors. As you have recently acquired knowledge from your unit Designing with colour, Artichoke has asked you to write a paragraph critiquing the success or failure of the colour design in the space you selected for this assignment.
Write a critique about colour design within your selected space.
Include at least one citation from unit modules and one citation from your research. (200 words, maximum mark 14/14)
[Hint: Your ideas and observations should be supported by materials such as scholarly research, industry articles, and or comparative (real-world) examples.
