ENVS217 Catchment Hydrology 2022/23
PRACTICAL 2: WATER RESOURCES
Assessment
You need to produce a report on the practical in the form of three short summaries:
? Length: The word limit is 1800 words, but this is not a target. In the past students have gained high marks
writing around 1200-1500 words. Each summary should be between 400 and 600 words. This limit does not
include figure/table captions, data tables and references but does include all other text.
? Deadline: Thursday 15th December, 2pm
? Submission: Please only submit a digital copy to Canvas
? The report is worth 50% of the final module mark
Scenario:
? You are a hydrologist working for the Environment Agency.
? Your team leader is attending an important meeting to present your teams’ position on water resource
management (common practice in large organisations).
? You have been asked to produce 3 short summaries that review and interpret hydrology data which your
team leader will present at the meeting.
What to include:
Your report should include three sections, one for each of the summaries. The information must be presented
clearly and concisely to make it easy for your team leader to present.
You should follow the same format for each of the three summaries. Use subheadings to separate these.
1. Summarise the problem
? Give a brief background explaining the water resource management issue. Think about who your
team leader will be talking to in the meeting and the information they will need to understand the
problem
2. Present the results and discussion
? Present any relevant graphs and tables that are needed to understand the data (check labels, units,
and formatting!)
? Give your analysis and interpretation. Think about how the data you have looked at links to the
themes covered in the lectures (refer to your lecture notes to help with this) and use this section to
highlight your understanding of the problem
? Give details of the data and data sources you have used (e.g., data frequency, what years you have
included)
3. Set out your recommendations
? These need to be clearly set out and should be supported by your data and interpretation
4. Include a list of references to support your analysis, interpretation, and recommendations
What not to do:
? Write in an essay style. A report should have clear headings and subheadings
? Include a methods section
? Repeat common presentation and referencing mistakes made by students in reports (see guides on Canvas
under practical 1)
HINT: Make sure you read the general feedback from Practical 1 (available on Canvas) and think about your own
feedback on your report. What can you improve on for the Practical 2 report? We also recommend you attend the
Practical 2 assessment workshop to make the most of the help available.
Marking Criteria
Qualitative Criteria Fail Third 2:2 2:1 First
Catchment characteristics (Does the answer show an
understanding of the importance of topographic data to
demonstrate and communicate clearly understanding of
catchment hydrology?) (Q1)
Annual hydrograph (Has the deviation from normal conditions
been correctly identified and described) (Q1)
Completed FDCs?
(Has the data been downloaded, sorted, correct use of
formula?) (Q2)
Interpretation of data (Does the answer display an
understanding of analysing and interpreting long term data?
Does the answer display an understanding of the flow duration
curve? (Q2)
Interpretation of data (Does the answer recognise a
difference between modelled and observed data?
(Q2)
Environmental Flow (Does the answer display an
understanding of water for environmental need and the
application of environmental flow building blocks?)
(Q3)
Water resource supply and demand balance (does the
Answer demonstrate an understanding of the balance between
supply and demand and future pressures?) (Q3)
INTERPRETATION (demonstrate good communication of the
data and analysis and its implications. Does the answer
demonstrate originality of thought supported by wider reading?)
(Q1, 2 and 3)
PRESENTATION (Is the report well laid out with clear headings
and sub-headings?)
WRITING (Is there correct use of spelling and grammar? Is
science vocabulary, correct?)
Please note that the final mark awarded is NOT produced by ‘averaging’ the grade in each column.
You will be provided with feedback within VITAL in three ways:
? Full breakdown of marks using the criteria above
? Comments that provide an explanation for your mark and identify key strengths and areas for
improvement
? General comments on performance as a cohort
