ARCH121 Coursework Brief 2022/23
On the basis of the two texts you have studied this semester, and the material covered in the lectures and building visits, establish a set of
criteria to write a formal analysis on a building of your choice. The building must fit into one of the patterns discussed by Alexander Purves in
‘The Persistence of Formal Patterns’ and must be one of the following: School; Parliament or Town Hall Building or similar; Place of Worship
(Church, Temple, Mosque etc.); Hospital; Museum or Gallery; University Building; Housing Block with at least 50 units; Office Block; Science
Research Facility (Laboratories etc.); Transport Building (Train Station; Airport Terminal etc.); Sports Facility (Stadium; Sports Centre;
Swimming Pool etc.); Music Venue or Theatre. The building can be located anywhere in the world, and ideally you will have first hand
experience of it.
To analyse the building you may select either from the criteria used by Purves and Frampton, or add criteria you feel might be missing,
but beneficial. You may want to consult other texts, for instance Paulette Singley’s book How to read architecture, or think about criteria that
in your view have not been covered elsewhere. You may also, for example, consult Richard Meier’s diagrams as a form of analysis. Your
comparative analysis should comprise of at least 4 separate points / criteria, keeping in mind that the individual criteria are not isolated points,
but rather that the chosen points should help you to analyse and describe your building in a coherent way. One of the criteria you choose,
however, will have to relate to the building’s plan (pattern, type, circulation etc.).
First, and in no more than 400 words explain how the building fits one of Purves’ patterns, set out your criteria and why you have
chosen them, and why you think they are important (also ideally making reference to the sources you have studied). Possible headings /
criteria could for example be (some in accordance with Purves, Frampton, Meier, Singley): type or pattern; the section; structure; enclosure
and elevations; circulation; repetition of elements; materials; spatial sequences; site; public and private spaces; route and goal; front and back.
Once you have established and chosen your criteria, apply your analysis to the building of your choice, ideally one you have visited and
for which you will be able to obtain illustrations, i.e. drawings and photographs. A good place to find drawings of local buildings in your home
town you may have visited in the past are the planning portals of local councils from where you can often download drawings of relatively
recent planning applications, i.e. less than 20 years old in most cases. Architecture books and journals are other obvious sources.
The most important thing about your analysis is that it makes you and the reader understand the building better. The total word count
of your analysis should be no more than 2,000 words, including notes, references, headings and captions (1,700 words minimum, 2,200
maximum. If the essay is below 1,700 or over 2,200 words I will deduct marks). The analysis should be well illustrated and the illustrations
should relate well to the text and vice versa. You may either redraw the documents you have available, or annotate the drawings you have
found so they make sense in the context of your analysis.
Finally, no buildings covered in the lectures are permitted.
Good luck!

A few pointers re ARCH121 Coursework
Title
Your articles should have a title that suggests your take on the building you are writing about.
Layout and Structure of the Coursework
Please use headings / subtitles for the different sections of your essay, and provide captions for the illustrations.
Try and make your work look professional, i.e. like a magazine article or building review in a journal.
Text
Try to look at the text as a whole. It would be good if you could construct a narrative that emphasises your take on the building. What are the
key points you are trying to make?
Illustrations
Ask yourself what the illustrations are for, i.e. what are the points you are trying to illustrate. Try and use your own diagrams, redrawn plans
and sections etc.
Precedents
It might be useful to look at a few contemporary architecture journals / magazines, for example Architecture Today, The Architect’s Journal,
The Architectural Review, Casabella, L’Architecture D’Aujourd’Hui, Baumeister to see how building reviews are laid out and written. If possible,
go to the library and look at the journals – you will discover a whole new world!
Bibliography and references
Please provide a bibliography of the sources you have consulted. Make sure that that you clearly reference in the sources you cite.
Please use Harvard referencing.
