Linda Brown 1 of 3 Engineering Skills M – Modelling of Structures Lecturer: Mrs Linda Brown (linda.brown@glasgow.ac.uk, Room 802) Course code: ENG5322 Course credits: 10 (Modelling of Structures is 50% of the credits) Objectives of the course 1. To develop ability to apply the modelling process to frame models of structures 2. To apply the principles of technical report writing. Description In this exercise you will work in a group (of four) to design, construct and test a ROBOT analysis model of a framed structure. The group will decide on the structural form of the frame and on the detail and type of structural members and connections. The ROBOT analysis model should represent typically around 50 structural members. Autodesk ROBOT analysis software is free for students to download: http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/robot-structural-analysis-professional Supporting Textbook MacLeod I A (2005) Modern Structural Analysis Thomas Telford Ltd ISBN 978-0-7277-4102- 8 See: http://www.imacleod.com Assessment The project will be assessed on a report submission. One report per group must be submitted. All group members should have seen and reviewed all parts of the report prior to submission. The report must be submitted on Moodle by 12pm on Wednesday 31st March 2021. The University’s standard penalties for late submission will apply. The % of report marks will be allocated as follows: Mark Conformance with required style 10 Items 1,2,3 (in list above) 10 Engineering model sketch 10 Analysis model sketch 10 Validation 10 Verification 20 Sensitivity analysis 20 Member size checking 10 Engineering Skills M (ENG5322) Modelling of Structures 2020/21 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Linda Brown 2 of 3 Course Organisation Start week: Semester 2, week 8 (S2/8) – Friday 5th March at 11:00am End Week: Semester 2, week 11 (S2/11) The 4 x 3hour computer lab sessions will be in the form of workshops involving a combination of instructions and, working in groups or individually, carrying out tasks to develop ability in relation to the objectives. Attendance at all sessions is compulsory. Week Content and Tasks S2/8 Select a small simple structural system (roof truss, building frame). At least one member should be subject to bending action. The material can be steel, concrete or timber. Prepare an engineering model for the structure including a drawing showing member sizes, sections, material type and loading. Set up an analysis model for it (typically use not more than 50 members). Prepare a drawing of this model. S2/9 Carry out a validation of the analysis model and report on the outcomes. Run the model using FE software Carry out a verification of the results and report on the outcomes. S2/10 Carry out a sensitivity analysis by varying the properties of at least 3 of the input parameters and report on what was learned about the behaviour of the system. Use the results from the analysis model to check the sizes of 2 members of the structure. Prepare a technical assessment of the structure on the basis of the checks . S2/11 Finalise the model and report 31/03/21 Submit report Engineering Skills M (ENG5322) Modelling of Structures 2020/21 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Linda Brown 3 of 3 Contents of report 1. Cover page, with a list of names and GUID numbers of all group members. 2. Contents list 3. Introduction, which should include a clear description of the project requirements. 4. An executive summary, the main conclusion of the work. 5. The engineering model. This information – mainly as a drawing or sketch is provided so that the analysis model can be checked against the design. Ask the question: “Could someone else check that the analysis model is compatible with the engineering model ” The information needed includes: dimensions, member types, material type, details of supports , details of connections, loading 6. The analysis model. In deciding what to include in this section, ask the question: “Could someone else check that that data for the analysis is compatible with the analysis model ” The information needed includes: dimensions of the analysis model, mesh details, section properties, support types, loading used for model. 7. Validation of the model. This is a list of decisions about the suitability of the assumptions made for the model. 8. Verification of the results. This is a list of checks and calculations required to verify that the model is functioning correctly and has been correctly implemented. 9. Results of sensitivity analysis. The effects of different features/parameters values are investigated. The results should be tabulated. 10. Check the sizes of two members against code of practice rules. 11. Conclusions on how successful the modelling process has been and whether any future changes are required.
