INDIVIDUAL ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS
An essay of 2500 words (+/- 10%) including citations but excluding the references list must be submitted by the deadline indicated on your timetable, using the following instructions:
Select two national economies and compare these within the ‘Varieties of Capitalism’ theoretical framework focusing one of the following institutions:
oCorporate governance (Option 1)
oNational employment systems (Option 2)
oNational culture (Option 3)
GUIDELINES AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Read these requirements and restrictions carefully.
?Start preparing early and reflect on your plans for your essay in lectures and seminars. You are expected to make specific connections between lecture/seminar discussions, academic resources available via the module reading list, and your selected comparison economies.
?You can compare national business systems discussed in module lectures and seminars (such as the UK and Germany) or you can select others, but please ensure that you have a theoretical reason and justification for selecting your comparison pair. This will make it far easier to develop a coherent and compelling case and build a clear argument.
?The essay must include a coherent overview of the two national economies in terms of their similarities and differences in the area you have selected. You should compare and contrast these systems in terms of their characteristics in the last few decades.
?The essay must provide an assessment of continuity or change in the two economies that you have chosen. Do they show evidence of convergence or do they remain distinctly different in the institution that you have selected for discussion?
?The essay must engage with the theoretical frameworks and conceptual tools covered and discussed in the module. For example, your discussion of corporate governance must be clearly embedded in the Varieties of Capitalism framework and not in related but different debates in the field of finance or economics.
?You must cite the appropriate academic sources for information and data on your selected cases. You are also encouraged to incorporate additional information from other sources (for example reliable sources in the media that may provide evidence on more recent developments such as Brexit and the Covid19 pandemic) but these must be limited and secondary to robust academic sources.
?You must state your overall argument clearly and support it with relevant evidence. Your Introduction and Conclusion must be clear about the overall position you adopt in the essay.
?You must follow the appropriate academic writing conventions, including clear and analytical language. This is rarely achieved, however, by borrowing directly from sources. Your original voice must be heard in the essay. When in doubt, it is preferable to write in your own voice even if it is linguistically imperfect, rather than borrowing directly from sources but failing to demonstrate your own thinking.
?Evidence of independent critical thinking is necessary in PG level coursework and for high marks.
?Use Times New Roman 12pt font, double line spacing, and 2.54cm margins.
?Citations and references must be complete, accurate and formatted according to the Harvard Referencing Style. Failure to properly identify verbatim quotes or specific ideas/points taken from external sources may lead to the classification of your work as plagiarism.
?Remove all personal identifiers on the written document when you submit your work electronically. No information about your identity should be available to the marker, the second marker or the external examiner. All marking is done anonymously in order to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all assessment work.
?The standard PG Assessment Criteria will apply – see below:
