Assessment Brief:
This module has introduced you to key subjects and concepts that inform Strategic Operations Management.
Your individual assignment, with an approximate word limit of 4000, seeks to take your learning further than the lectures and tutorials by focusing on THREE topic areas and writing an in-depth case study that describes, analyses, and makes recommendations on Strategic Operations Management within an organisation.
The organisation can be in private or public sectors and may be involved in manufacturing or services. The organisation may be one that you have worked in, during placement, or one that you have worked in previously. If you cannot make use of work experience, you can use an organisation from publicly available resources that you must reference. You must ensure that your work has integrity, is original, and is not cut and pasted from another case study, and is entirely your own, individual creation. We will be able to determine if this has been done so, please do NOT plagiarise your work.
Choose a company that has recently had problems. This can be a scandal regarding the (lack of) sustainability, employment conditions, supply chain relationships, or something else. It could also be a company that has been struggling financially or has had difficulties due to disrupted supply chains.
The report should include the following and be written in this format:
Title page
Include a front title page as a separate sheet which should include the module title “MANG6525 Strategic Operations Management”, the assignment title e.g., “Analysis of Operations Strategies of XYZ Organisation”, the word count, and your student ID number. Please do not include your name as the assignments will be marked anonymously.
Structure of your report
It is essential to have a strong and coherent structure and to make the structure obvious, so use numbered headings to break your report into discrete sections. Adding subtitles (if appropriate), especially in the main part where you are expected to demonstrate the ability to implement appropriate methods/principles to carry out your analysis and interpret the results for further recommendations, which will make the report more structured and easier to read and comprehend. Your report should have the following sections as a minimum:
Section 1: Introduction
This should describe the nature of the operations of the selected case company: e.g., introduce the case company, the market it serves, any external forces that influence the organisation etc. to provide a context for the report. Introduce the difficulties or challenges that the organisation has been facing. The introduction should also highlight the objectives and purpose of your report and signpost the structure of what follows.
Sections 2, 3 and 4
You need to describe, analyse and assess THREE key operational processes and how these operations link together to add value and meet customer / client needs. Suitable operational processes include: transformation process; layout and process selection; innovation management; lean operations; project management; managing inventory; managing quality; delivering services; reverse logistics; etc. Appropriate management tools should be used for this critical analysis. When you assess the current operations management capability, you need to include data and information which support your discussion, and this must not be purely anecdotal in nature.
One of these sections MUST discuss how the organisation will increase its performance in terms of ethics, responsibility and sustainability. This may include a transformation towards the Circular Economy. Explain the interests of all involved stakeholders, what the challenges are and how the company will address them.
In each of the Sections 2, 3 and 4, you need to provide recommendations for improving the situation. These recommendations should include resource implications as well as perceived benefits to the organisation and the world around it. A sense of timing for implementation is important for recommendations; are they short-term or long-term?
