Lectures/seminars will cover concepts relevant to this
assessment, and allow opportunities for advice and feedback.
Lectures will cover Module Review and Assessment Q&A.
1. What is the Purpose of this Assessment
The following table shows which of the module learning outcomes are being assessed in this assignment. Use this table to
help you see the connection between this assessment and your learning on the module.
Module Learning Outcomes Being Assessed
Differentiate between social and private enterprise in terms of goals and resources.
Evaluate different measures of performance and impact ascribed to social enterprise.
2. What is the Task for this Assessment
Task The individual assignment will need to respond to the following
questions:
1. Distinguish between social enterprise and business
enterprise, and critically assess whether it is possible for social
entrepreneurs to seek profit maximisation without diluting the
ideology of social entrepreneurship. Use real life examples to
support your arguments. (2,000 words)
2. Critically reflect on what you have learned from this module.
(500 words)
To answer these questions, you will need to refer to academic
literature, provide real life examples, and reflect on your learning
from the module (e.g. from lectures, seminars, theoretical content,
real life examples, teamwork, guest speakers, assessment, etc.).
3. What is Required of Me in this Assessment
Guidelines/Details of how
to prepare your
submission
Besides studying lecture material and attending seminars,
substantial work is anticipated outside of teaching hours,
including independent research and reading, as well as
reflection on your personal development throughout the
module.
For question 1 (main essay): You must use both academic
references and real life examples to support your arguments.
For question 2 (reflection piece): This is about your personal
experience, with critical reflection on your learning and
development through the module (e.g. from lectures, seminars,
theoretical content, real life examples, teamwork, guest
speakers, assessment, etc.). It is helpful to reflect on how you
have applied or will use learning from the module going
forward. The reflection piece can be written in the first person,
and can use both academic references and real life examples
where applicable.

Three key pieces of advice
based on the Feedback
given to the previous
cohort that completed this
assignment
Ability to integrate theory and practice is crucial. For instance:
o In distinguishing between social enterprise and business
enterprise, you need to critically highlight differences as
well as similarities, using real life examples of both
types of enterprises to illustrate your points.
o In assessing whether or not profit maximisation may
dilute the ideology of social entrepreneurship, please
use real life examples to demonstrate different
perspectives and sides of the argument.
Ensure that you balance word count. For instance:
o Question 1 carries 2,000 words which need to be
balanced between the first part and second part of this
question. Students often make the mistake of using
much of the word count to “distinguish between social
and business enterprise”, leaving little room to
“critically assess whether it is possible for social
entrepreneurs to seek profit maximisation without
diluting the ideology of social entrepreneurship”.
o Question 2 carries 500 words for critical reflection.
Your opinion matters! Critical evaluation of literature/evidence
is needed to justify your arguments.
