The word count does not include figures, graphs, author names in references, the bibliography
at the end of the question, and equations.
Instructions for Candidates:
Please provide answers for ALL questions in the Mandatory Question section. Then provide
ONE essay from the ESSAY QUESTIONS section.
Your answer should provide appropriate reference to recent economic literature, economic
theories and/or empirical analyses. The reading list as well as the reference lists at the end
of the lecture slides feature such literature.
If you write more than one essay (second section), only the first, in the order it appears in the
script, will be marked.
A complete bibliography is not required for items from the course’s reading list; they can be
referred to using author(s) (year) only.

MANDATORY QUESTIONS (10% of your mark each)
Please answer ALL of the following questions with a maximum of 300 words each:
1. Name one informal institution and explain shortly how scholars have associated it to
differences in economic development across nations.
2. Name and explain one “positive check”, and discuss how it has been linked to inequality
across societies within a Malthusian world.
3. Name one aspect relevant for the understanding of international trade in the 20th century
and shortly explain how it contributed to the Second Wave of Globalization.
ESSAY QUESTIONS (70% of your mark)
Please select one of the following questions. Then provide ONE essay of a maximum of
1,000 words for this question. Your essay should use academic references, have a logical and
clear structure, and rely on empirical or theoretical evidence from the economics literature.
A. What is the role of human capital for the emergence of humanity out of the Malthusian
Trap
B. “Britain was headed to be the first industrialized nation for thousands of years.” Discuss.
C. “World War I was the formative catastrophe of the 20th century.” Discuss this statement
in light of the world economy, with a focus on Europe.
