The word count does not include figures, graphs, author names in references, the bibliography
at the end of the question, and equations.
A complete bibliography is not required for items from the course’s reading list nor items that
are referenced at the end of any lecture slide; they can be referred to using author(s) (year)
only.
Instructions for Candidates:
Please provide answers for ALL questions in the Mandatory Question section. Then provide
ONE essay from the ESSAY QUESTIONS section.
Your answer should provide appropriate reference to recent economic literature, economic
theories and/or empirical analyses. The reading list as well as the reference lists at the end
of the lecture slides feature such literature.

1. Briefly explain the term “Great Divergence”.
2. Briefly outline evidence for the economic effect of the Transatlantic slave trade.
3. What is the main lesson from the Great Depression
ESSAY QUESTIONS (70% of your mark)
Please select one of the following questions. Then provide ONE essay of a maximum of
1,000 words for this question. Your essay should use academic references, have a logical and
clear structure, and rely on empirical or theoretical evidence from the economics literature.
A. “Europe industrialized first because it’s people are naturally more inquisitive”. Discuss.
B. Why was there no Industrial Revolution in 1,000 AD
C. In the 20th century, the United States became the richest economy in the world. Why
