Research Skills in Mathematics (3RSM): Syllabus
1. Module Coordinator
Dr Tanya Gaydaenko (T.Gaydaenko@bham.ac.uk)
Office location: Room 236, Watson Building

3. Aims and Objectives
The aim of this independent study-based module is to help you further develop skills in research and investigation, report writing, group work and presentation. These are skills that will be essential whether you choose to pursue either further study or employment. To support you, a series of lectures in Semesters 1and 2 will introduce you to relevant ideas and techniques and will discuss report writing and presentation skills. The remainder of the module consists of independent research into an appropriate mathematical/pedagogical topic of your choosing. You will have a small number of group/individual meetings with an assigned supervisor, during which you will discuss and review both your own and other students’ work. You will also produce a report on your investigations along with giving an oral presentation.

4. Learning Outcomes
By the end of module, you should be able to:

Undertake and report on literature searches.
Plan and write a report on a mathematical topic.
Review and provide feedback upon the work of others.
Present project findings.
Give an oral presentation and answer questions.

5. Assessment
There are the compulsory tasks you need to complete as part of this module and they are detailed in Table 1. While not all tasks have credit associated with them, they are compulsory and form an important source of formative feedback on your work as such are essential to your success on this module. Assessment criteria are available on Canvas.

6. Student-Owned Learning
3RSM is based around independent study and as such allows you to pursue research into areas of mathematics or pedagogy that are of most interest and relevance to you and your future study or employment plans. As a consequence, it fully employs the principles of student-owned learning that places the emphasis upon you to manage and structure your learning. This includes:

·Finding a range of information and making your own evaluation of its accuracy, use and relevance.
·Set your own learning targets to allow you to better understand the topic you are studying.
·Ask, and answer, your own questions about the topic and presenting your findings in an appropriate form to communicate mathematical/pedagogical ideas.
·Manage and structure your own learning, including meeting all assignments deadlines.
·Working independently to achieve the required learning outcomes.

To help guide you, there will be a series of meetings with you supervisor, some of which will take place in groups and some individually throughout the academic year. It is important you use these meetings wisely; please arrive prepared to your tutorials and meetings having identified areas where you would like advice and guidance or any questions you may want answered. In addition to the meetings with supervisor, you may send up to two emails to your supervisor where you can ask for specific advice or guidance on the project, but it is important you allow your supervisor a reasonable amount of time for them to prepare and send their response.

9. Canvas
The Canvas section for this module is as follows:

3RSM – Research Skills in Mathematics (06 23753)
https://canvas.bham.ac.uk/courses/77930

The Canvas page will be updated with a range of information that will be helpful to you throughout this module; it will also be used for all course announcements and so you should ensure you check these regularly. If you are unable to access the Canvas section for this module, please contact the Module coordinator or the Education Support Office (ESO, Room S11 in the Poynting Building).

10. General Queries
It is recognised that on a module like this there will be a number of queries and questions. For queries associated with your mathematical/pedagogical projects you should discuss these with your supervisor at the individual meetings. For more general queries, and to ensure an efficient and consistent response to these, a list of ‘Frequently asked Questions’ will be maintained on Canvas. You are welcome to email the Module Coordinator at any time: Dr Tanya Gaydaenko t.gaydaenko@bham.ac.uk.
