Final Assessment: Can interaction shape organisation

Coursework Brief
The main assignment asks you to think through whether or not interaction shapes
organisation. This is an individual written assignment that requires you to draw on
academic material to demonstrate the extent to which interaction shapes organisation. It
would be useful to examine an example, but equally you are free to develop theoretical
arguments based on the research literature. The assignment is 2,000 words in length and
represents 80% of the module mark. The assessment must be submitted electronically via Turnitin on canvas and the deadline for submission is the 11th of April 2025 at 14:00.
Each of the papers you reviewed for the précis examined issues of performativity (Roscoe & Chillas, 2014), discourse and language (Simpson, et al, 2018), or more general
understandings through employer-employee relations and unionisation (Roy, 1980). Each
of these readings that you reviewed would provide a different perspective on how interaction determines how people are organised. There is no stipulation on how you engage with the question, with the exception that it must focus on social aspects of organisation, where the social represents relations between people, people and things, people and ideas and how behaviour and understandings are shaped by the world around us. As such it is incredibly important to review your feedback (not just the grade of your précis) in order to develop your writing and critical。engagement skills for your final assessment. Time will be set aside by the module coordinator to review your work and provide guidance for engaging with the final assessment.

You could draw on the concept of performativity, the idea that ‘things do not need to be real to be real in their effects (Thomas & Thomas, 1918) and therefore words perform a function in terms of determining what an individual may deem permissible. For example, a bank does not need to be at risk of bankruptcy to become bankrupt, what is important is that investors believe the bank to be at risk of bankruptcy and they will act accordingly. On the other hand ideas of the body may show how our bodies are already inscribed with meanings that determine are actions. How we feel about are bodies can often be shaped by external influences, such as the popular media, peers and ideas about what a ‘good’ body might be. Of course these are issues of interaction, not necessarily in a verbal or discursive sense (although this would be an important consideration), but in terms of
our relations with the far broader world around us. The focus then is whether relations between the social world and ourselves, such as the media, peers, colleagues, organisational culture and expectations can and or do shape what an organisation is Further assessment details will be provided once you have submitted the précis.
