Historiographical Exercise
Annotated Bibliography Due Date: 5 May 2025: 11.59pm: 1.500 words: 35%
An annotated bibliography gives an overview of the scholarship (or a scholarly problem) on a paricular topic. An annotated bibliography is laid out
the same way as a normal bibliography at the end of your essay. However, under each source citation you will add a description which outlines and
evaluates the strength/weaknesses of the source, the author’s argument and it’s contribution to scholarship/a scholary debate. Through your
annotated bibliography, you will demonstrate your understanding of the historiographical iterature on your topic, your ability to assess the reading
critically, your writing skills and your referencing skills
For this assignment, you will select one of the weekly topics to focus on. For example, ifyou are interested in ideas of gender during the Georgian
period, you wil focus on the week 7 topic (masculinity & femininity. You wil conduct research to identify the most relevant historiography and
debates surounding this topic. You can use the further reading ist for each week but bilbliographies which demonstrate research beyond this list will
be rewarded. NB: it is a good idea to focus on a topic that you will also focus on for your major essay!
Please note, you cannot use the sources from the weekly essential reading but you can use the further reading list
This assessment willprovide you with the opportunity to further practice your writing and referencing skills, Assessment willbe based upon these
research skills and your interpretation of your sources.
Your annotations should still conform to the Chicago Manual of Style 4,referencing system.
Annotated Bibliography Structure
Your annotated bibliography should follow all the usual formatting conventions and should be structured as follows:
1. A header with basic information; name, student lD, tutorial time & day, chosen topic:
2. A 200 word abstract which gives a summary of the scholarly debates on your chosen topic.
3. Your annotated entries should include:
A. Citation of your source which conforms to the Chicago footnote/bibliography style (not included in the word count)
B.A short statement giving an overview of the text:
C. A summation of the author’s argument and the sources/methodologies they use to support this argument (most important!!).
D. Comments on the strengths, usefulness and/or limitations of the text (if appropriate/if word count allows);
E, A fnal evaluative sentence (or two) explaining why the source is useful/practical/applicable to the feld and/or to your major essay
Remember:
The word limit is 1.500 words
Word limits include text but do not include the citations
You have 10% leeway, so your fnished text can be between 1,350 words and 1,650 words
Format your essay correctly and in accordance with the normal guidelines
Use Chicago Footnote/Bibliography referencing style only
Submit your essay to the Turnitin portal
