answering no more than ONE question from each section. Only one question
from any one section will receive a mark.

Section 1: What is good
1. What is utilitarianism Present an objection. Can utilitarianism satisfactorily
respond to the objection
OR
2. Jenny doesn’t want to go out tonight, but previously told her friend that she
would, so is thinking about telling her friend that she is ill, which would be a
lie. Is this morally permissible Provide an argument from Kantian ethics that
answers the question. Consider at least one objection.
Section 2: Why be good
1. What is the argument from social punishment Does this argument
successfully provide reason for us to be moral or merely to appear to be
moral Give reasons for your answer and consider what an opponent would
say.
OR
2. Is it possible for a person to be admirable for acting immorally Consider an
objection to the possibility of moderate admirable immorality.
Section 4: What is the meaning of life
1. Why does Bernard Williams hold that an immortal life is a necessarily boring
life and thus a meaningless life Critically evaluate one objection to his
account.
OR
2. What is Susan Wolf’s account of meaningfulness in life Critically evaluate an
objection to her account.
