Candidates should answer TWO questions in total,
answering no more than ONE question from each section.

Section 1: Why be good
1. Present and explain an argument that we lack any reasons to be good and have
reasons only to appear to be good. Is this argument sound Respond to at least one
objection to your view
2. How does Marcia Baron argue that there is no such thing as admirable immorality
Critically evaluate her view, considering at least one objection.
Section 2: How should we live together
1. “[T]here are many acts which, being directly injurious only to the agents themselves, ought
not to be legally interdicted [prohibited], but which, if done publically, are a violation of good
manners, and coming thus within the category of offences against others, may rightfully be
prohibited.”
In this passage John Stuart Mill expresses his support for the prohibition of publicly indecent
acts. Explain how prohibition on public indecency is inconsistent with Mill’s Harm Principle.

2. What is Susan Wolf’s objective condition on having meaningfulness in one’s life Evaluate
Wolf’s reasoning for thinking that there must be an objective condition on meaningfulness.
